We are a community volunteer group supporting the management of our local green space for the benefit of the community.

August 2023 - Woodlands Shireoaks Newsletter

Summer has been a quieter time for routine maintenance which has given all of us time to enjoy the nature on our doorstep, and especially to see how the Wildlife Discovery Site has evolved naturally over time with ox-eye daises, wild carrot, and birds foot trefoil. We held our Annual General Meeting on the Wildlife Discovery Site where we had a talk from the Conservation Officer from a local birdwatching group SK58 Birders which inspired us all to take more notice of our natural surroundings.

Now we move into Autumn which is a particularly busy time for us, and we are pleased to announce two exciting new projects.

Plant a lasting legacy in the local community.

This project, Trees for Climate, gives you the opportunity to put down roots in the local area that will last for generations.

We are pleased to announce that Coachwood Green, the former horse paddocks at the top of Coach Road, has successfully been chosen as part of an exciting nation-wide project to plant 250 hectares of new woodlands over 5 years.

The Trees for Climate programme is led by England’s Community Forests and Greenwood Community Forest, hosted by Nottinghamshire County Council is delivering the programme in Nottinghamshire, more information can be found: https://www.greenwoodforest.org.uk/helping-greenwood-to-grow/grow-your-roots

The Friends of Woodlands and Coachwood Green are supporting this project to develop more woodland and open green space for the community, and we have created a design shown in the plan which incorporates existing woodlands and trees, with new mixed tree planting and individual trees all connected by a pathway and open spaces, with a heritage community orchard at the entrance.

The benefits of this include:

  • Capture carbon to play an important role in our national mission of achieving net zero by 2050.
  • Reduce flood risk by creating natural flood management systems.
  • Improve biodiversity by providing wildlife habitats and connecting wildlife corridors.
  • Allow for more public access to green space to boost health and wellbeing.

We will start work in November this year and there is an opportunity for you to be part of this. Your trees will stand as a positive legacy for a brighter future, a gift to the environment on behalf of your family and friends. It will become a place for future generations to enjoy and a home for wildlife.  And by planting trees, you will be making a clear sign that you’re playing your part in addressing our changing climate.

Learn and discover about the habitats and species on your local doorstep

We are pleased to inform you we have received funding from both Nottinghamshire County Council Local Communities Fund and the National Grid Community Matters Fund to carry out Phase II of the Wildlife Discovery Area.

You can be part of the creation of this outdoor space for learning and discovery.  The Wildlife Discovery Area already has a bird hide, a natural wildlife pond, access friendly footpaths, inside a native hedgerow boundary linked to wider wildlife corridors. In Phase II we will create habitats to increase biodiversity and support nature and wildlife education, by building bug hotels, butterfly mounds, planting more trees and installing nesting boxes and feeding stations. And create a nature and heritage trail around the site.

Located at the heart of the village community within 3km of woodland trails next to the county’s only Coronation Meadow and alongside the River Ryton and Chesterfield Canal, the is an ideal location to discover and learn about habitats and species, regenerating the landscape to enhance biodiversity so everyone can be involved and benefit.

If you would like to be part of these two projects as an individual, family, community group please contact us.
